The history of Woolworths

Founded in 1883 in Ohio, Woolworths is certainly no spring chicken in the supermarket game. It all started when Bernard Woolworths used his entire life savings to open up a grocery store. His approach was "Never sell anything you would not want yourself", and over 130 years later, that has definitely paid off.

In the 1930s, it ensured it got high-quality products with quality monitoring and taste tests for customers to try out new products. In the 1950s, it expanded by acquiring supermarket chains. In the 1970s, it was the first U.S. supermarket to do formal consumer research and test out electronic scanners.

Today, it's one of the biggest companies in the entire Australia.
